"Suppose one’s normal pulse to be 70: in five minutes it was 120: & the blood, not the sticky whitish fluid of daytime, but brilliant & prickling like champagne. This was my state, & most peoples. We collided, when we met: went pop, used Christian names, flattered, praised, & thought (or I did) of Shakespeare … We were all easy & gifted & friendly & like good children rewarded by having the capacity for enjoying ourselves thus. Could our fathers? … There is something indescribably congenial to me in this easy artists talk; the values the same as my own & therefore right; no impediments; life charming; good & interesting; no effort; art brooding calmly over it all."

Monday, 1 November:
There’s something in the water, or in the air. I think it’s definitely something in the air. All that haze, and the advent of Christmas must be driving everyone to the gym, muay thai lessons, and the bright promise of a bowl of greens.
Salad has in the last two weeks become the lunch staple (for me anyway). We share asparagus like french fries, compare broccoli consumption, and talk openly about the merits of a potato wedge versus a hash brown. We’re surrounded by so much good cheap food in Asia that sometimes it’s nice to just get away from the hawker stalls and ramen shops, and cleanse the palate. If anything, when we relapse back into full-on gluttons, we appreciate Asian food so much more.
Which is great because this weekend I’m going to really enjoy my moo nam tok (spicy pork salad) in Bangkok!
